Train fare evasion fines collected over 20 months in Egypt worth LE500M

CAIRO – 2 November 2020: Source at the Ministry of Transportation told Al Watan newspaper that the total value of fines collected from passengers who committed fare evasion over the past 20 months is LE500 million.

 

Before applying fines 20 months ago, the number of passengers who committed such violation was 50 million per annum.

 

The value of the fine is LE50 for boarding the new Transmashholding trains, LE40 for VIP trains, LE30 for air-conditioned trains, LE20 for special trains, and LE10 for trains operating between suburbs of different governorates. In addition, passengers who smoke on trains are fined LE70.

 

Senior citizens above 70 years of age have been exempted from the metro ticket, while those above 60 will have a 50 percent discount upon showing their national ID.
