CAIRO – 24 October 2020: A fire broke out in the market of Egypt Railway Station in Alexandria in the early morning of Saturday as a short circuit occurred in a shop selling sugar cane juice and extended to six others.

The fire urged the halting of the tramway operation as electricity supplied to the shops had to be cut in order to control the situation.

The French Development Agency (FDA) is ready to fund the tramway project in Alexandria's Raml neighborhood with €100 million, French Ambassador to Cairo Stéphane Romatet said in July 2019.

In September 2017, the National Authority for Tunnels has launched the project of renovating Alexandria Tramway network, which was introduced in 1863 consisting of 20 lines operating on 32 kilometers and serving 140 stops.

The project entails switching to electric locomotives, whose vehicles are equipped with air conditioners, operating on 14 kilometers at a speed of maximum 140 km/h and serving 28 stations. The railroads would pass through tunnels or bridges at crossroads.
