CAIRO – 16 October 2020: Two muggers were detained on Friday for four days pending investigations for killing and robbing a 24-year-old girl in Al-Maadi district on Tuesday evening.

The victim, Mariam, was killed after one of the muggers in a microbus yanked her backpack, causing her head to smash with a nearby car, the Egyptian Public Prosecution said, citing an eyewitness.

As per the initial investigations, the accused people confessed that they robbed the girl and ran away, without knowing that she was killed. They insisted that they did not mean to kill her.

This refutes an earlier claim on social media that the motive behind the incident was harassment.

The perpetrators were arrested on Wednesday, amid public outrage, few hours after the incident.

An eyewitness told the prosecution he saw Mariam talking to another girl just before a microbus with its rear license plate scrapped off came close to them.

Two men were in the microbus including the driver, said the witness, adding that the other guy yanked the backpack of the girl and clung to it while the vehicle is moving, causing her head to smash with a nearby car.

The victim passed away after the ambulance vehicle arrived half an hour after the incident.

The Public Prosecution said it decided to summon the girl that accompanied the victim during the incident and requested the police investigations on the incident and the perpetrators.
