Egypt's FM Sameh Shoukry met with United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov.

CAIRO - 14 October 2020: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated Egypt's stand backing the Palestinians' rights to establish an independent state along the 1967 borders under the two-state solution.

Shoukry's remarks came during his meeting with United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov.

The two discussed the latest developments related to the Palestinian issue, and opportunities to re-engage in the peace track to achieve security and stability in the region.

Shoukry underlined Egypt's keenness on offering all needed support for the UN envoy in order to revive the peace process and realize regional security and stability.

For his part, Mladenov reviewed the contacts he held with various parties concerned to push forward the peace process, stressing keenness on continued coordination with Egypt.

He voiced appreciation to Egypt's continued support for clinching a just and perpetual solution to the Palestinian cause as well as its efforts to close Palestinian ranks.

The two parties agreed to continue consultation and coordination in the coming period to follow up the latest developments.

Mladenov, the United Nations envoy to the Middle East, has called for intensifying international efforts to achieve peace between Palestine and Israel.

In a speech in June 2020, he referred to Israel's plan to annex the lands of the West Bank, where he said that annexing the West Bank will have major repercussions and lead to destabilization of the Palestinian territories, stressing that risks of such a move will hurt the fragile economic conditions.

"A political dialogue should be prioritized, not slidinginto chaos and not takingunilateral decisions," Mladenov stated, calling on the international community to pressure Israel in order not to implement this decision.
