CAIRO – 1 October 2020: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has affirmed the country’s stance on the Grand Ethiopian Dam aiming at reaching a fair and balanced agreement with the three concerned countries on the filling and operation of the massive dam, a statement by the Egyptian Side reported.

The remarks came in a video conference meeting between Egyptian Ambassador Badr Abdel Atti, assistant foreign minister for European affairs and Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Director General for Foreign Policy, Ambassador Madalena Fischer.

The Egyptian side referenced “hard negotiations” Egypt has been involved in to reach a deal that would serve the interests of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia and ensure Ethiopia’s right in development without harming the interests of the two downstream states.

During their meeting, the two sides have reviewed current development in Syria. Egypt has reiterated its stance calling for reaching a political solution to the crisis in the war-torn country, in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution no. 2254.

Egypt also affirmed continuous communication with partners and the UN envoy to Syria to enforce the relevant decision and end the suffering of Syrian people.

Fischer stressed her country's aspiration to hold the second round of the joint committee headed by the foreign ministers of the two countries early in 2021, to advance bilateral relations and to discuss the most prominent regional issues of common concern.

This comes in light of Portugal’s desire to know about the Egyptian viewpoint on important issues in the Middle East and Africa, especially as Portugal will assume the presidency of the European Union in early 2021, the statement read.

The Egyptian official accentuated the need for speeding up the formation of Egyptian-Portuguese business council to widen cooperation scope in new sectors mainly covering the industrial intelligence, education, digital transformation, Cybersecurity and smart transportation.

The meeting also tackled previously signed memorandum of understandings between the two sides in the various spheres, together with the negative impact of the current coronavirus pandemic that took its toll on global economy and the latest development in Syria.

Abdel Atti called on the Portuguese official to encourage Portugal's private firms to up their contribution to investments in Egypt and induce new overtures on this score, especially in current giant Egyptian national ventures.
