CAIRO – 10 September 2020: South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir expressed appreciation for the Egyptian aid provided to his country, represented in airlift sent to help people of South Sudan face the implications of floods, a statement by the Egyptian side read on Thursday.

 

Kiir thanked his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, for Egypt’s support to people of South Sudan at the times of crises, as he received Egyptian Water Resources Minister Mohamed Abdel Aati,

 

Egypt has continued to intensify the airlift scheduled to transport urgent humanitarian aid to Sudan and South Sudan, the Egyptian military spokesman said, amid deadly floods that hit both countries, leaving thousands homeless and dozens dead.

 

Two Egyptian military planes took off, carrying shipments of humanitarian aid to Sudan’s Khartoum, while a military plane headed to South Sudan’s capital of Juba, the spokesman added.

 

During his meeting with Kiir, Abdel Aati highlighted the projects carried out by Egypt’s Water Resources Ministry in South Sudan, affirming that Egypt is working to enhance means of cooperation with South Sudan.

 

Abdel Atti accompanied by a delegation from the ministry headed Tuesday to South Sudan in order to discuss reinforcing bilateral cooperation in the water resources realm.

 

In a meeting with his South Sudanese counterpart Manawa Peter on Wednesday, Abdel Aati voiced Egypt’s keenness to enhance the bilateral relations in the water field, according to a separate statement by the ministry.

 

Abdel Attai said that Egypt would increase the number of development projects for collecting and storing rainwater, with the aim of serving the South Sudanese people.

 

The projects include the establishment of river transportation systems and hydraulic modeling of river flow data collection, the statement added.
