CAIRO – 29 June 2020: The Health Affairs Committee at the Parliament approved in principle a draft law submitted by the government to amend some provisions in the law regulating the affairs of the medical professions during its Sunday meeting.

The draft law comes in light of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi’s directives to increase the allowance allocated for medical professions.

The death toll among doctors in Egypt due to COVID-19 infections reached 87 mid-June.

The first article in the law includes replacing the term “medical professions’ allowance” to “allowance for risks of infection” in the law regulating the affairs of the members of the medical professions who are not addressed in special laws or regulations.

A dispute was raised due to amending the allowance term in the law, with some expecting the new term will allow confusion.

The committee is expected to hold a meeting Monday to discuss the new amendment of the term in details.

The following risk allowances are stipulated in the draft law:

- L.E. 1,225 for physicians’ risk allowance.

- L.E. 875 for dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, physiotherapists.

- L.E. 790 for nursing specialists, chemists and physicists.

- L.E. 700 for those holding technical diplomas for nursing and health technicians.
