Egypt records 1475 COVID-19 cases, 87 deaths

CAIRO – 21 June 2020: Egypt recorded, Sunday, 1475 new coronavirus cases, upping the total number of confirmed cases to 55233.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 87 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 2193.

As many as 409 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 14736 so far, the spokesman said.

Also, the number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and had received negative results has reached 16214, he added.


Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called, Friday, for providing access to new technologies for disease detection or developing a new vaccine and treatment to all states, particularly to African countries, at reasonable prices.

In his speech in the High-Level Video Conference on the Belt and Road International Cooperation: Combating COVID-19 with Solidarity, Shoukry also called for granting immediate and sustainable channels of finance and debt relief with favorable conditions, in a way that does not pose any additional burdens.

“This necessitates concerted joint action through effective partnerships between governments, international and regional financial institutions, and the private sector to ensure necessary and swift financial flows,” he said.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of intensifying international cooperation, including by achieving the target goals of the Belt and Road Initiative, to help promote economic recovery, and mitigate the multiple challenges of the coronavirus.
