CAIRO – 22 June 2017: Tens of Ugandan citizens received Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi at Entebbe airport upon his arrival to participate in the Nile Basin summit Thursday.

Ugandan citizens played traditional music and performed African dances.
The songs described the deep relations between peoples of Nile Basin countries expressing the Ugandan people’s happiness of the president’s visit.

Other Nile Basin countries’ leaders are coming to Uganda, as the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has already arrived. Desalegn is expected to meet with Sisi within the sessions of the summit, and will participate in a closed session comprising the leaders of Nile Basin countries.

The summit comes as a result of Uganda’s mediation to bring Nile Basin countries together to the negotiations table to resolve conflicts and to implement pending mutual projects. The conflict over the Entebbe Agreement made donors withdraw from Nile Basin Initiative cooperation programs.

The 11 Nile Basin countries are Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo-Kinshasa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. The last three are downstream countries, while the rest are upstream.
