CAIRO – 16 April 2020: A factory to manufacture face masks in Cairo will increase its production lines to five, to raise the daily production to 500,000 masks, the Egyptian Health Ministry said, amid the crisis of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that has been contracted by over 2,500 people in Egypt and more than two million people worldwide.

Egypt Today could not know the exact number of masks produced currently by the factory, which operates by an Egyptian-Chinese partnership. However, medical official Omar Abdo, the executive manager of Euromed For Medical Industries, said earlier that the Chinese and Egyptian sides have agreed on establishing a factory that houses 10 machines, each can produce up to 120,000 masks daily. Five machines have so far been established, Abdo said, as the factory has been constructed starting February 26th.

According to Abdo, the factories manufacturing masks in Cairo can produce up to 200,000 masks daily. He noted that the new project will raise production to up to 1.7 million masks daily.

The Egyptian Chinese deal also stipulates that China provides Egypt with the components it needs to manufacture masks, including nose bridge wires, Abdo added.

Minister of Health Hala Zayed announced Thursday that Egypt received a shipment of preventive medical supplies and coronavirus testers as a gift from China.

The 4-ton shipment arrived at Cairo International Airport on Thursday, and was received by Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Lichiang and Undersecretary of Health Ministry Mohamed Shawqy. It included 20,000 medical masks, 10,000 protective gowns and 10,000 DNA detectors for COVID-19.
