CAIRO – 12 February 2020: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed U.S.-Egypt relations with national security adviser Rober O’Brien on Wednesday as well as a number of regional issues of mutual concern.

Shoukry traveled to the US on Monday to participate in talks with the foreign and irrigation ministers of Ethiopia and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in a final bid to resolve months of stalemates between Cairo and Addis Ababa over the operation of the mega dam.

The ministers of foreign affairs and water resources of the three countries agreed in January on a schedule for the filling plan and a mitigation mechanism for filling the dam during times of drought and prolonged drought.

Shokry and O'Brien stressed during their meeting the need to boost coordination between Egypt and the United States of America in a number of regional issues, including the Syrian crisis and the situation in Libya.

Both officials also highlighted Egypt’s efforts in combating terrorism and addressed countering the smuggling of terrorists to and from Libya and the Sahel and Sahara states.

They also reviewed the developments of the negotiations on the Renaissance Dam and the American administration's efforts to reach an agreement that serves the interests of the three countries.
