CAIRO - 11 February 2020: Due to accompanying his donkey on board of Nagaa Hammadi-Luxor passenger train, a farmer was fined LE 400 after the incident went viral on social media.

After the train moved from Abnoud railway station in Qena governorate, Upper Egypt, the conductor found a donkey tied to a pillar inside the train near the door. He later discovered that the donkey belongs to the farmer who decided to take the train with his newly-bought donkey to go back home.

It has been revealed that the farmer decided to get into the train after he failed to find proper transportation.

When the train conductor tried to make the farmer and his donkey get out of the passenger carriage in the next station in Qus, the farmer threatened to throw himself from the train while it was moving if anyone touches his donkey, according to an eye-witness.

The conductor filed a complaint against the farmer. The Railway Station Authority reacted to the story after photos of the donkey went viral on social media, affirmed the incident and fined the farmer LE 400.

As per the Egyptian Railway Regulatory Law No 277 of 1959, accompanying animals on board of a train is banned and the violation is punishable by 6 months to 2 years in prison and a fine of LE500 -LE10, 000.
