CAIRO – 26 December 2019: Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb visited Thursday St. Mark’s Cathedral in Abbasia to greet his Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria, and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, on Christmas Day.

Minister of Endowment Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa also led a delegation from the ministry that paid a visit to the cathedral to greet Pope Tawadros on Chirstmas Day.

The Ministry of Endowment (Awqaf) issued a statement saying that that the visit “ensures that we live together, in a spirit of citizenship, our happy occasions, and work together to protect our nation and maintain its highness. This comes in light of the tolerance of our religions, the greatness of the Egyptian civilization, the pure national spirit, and the wise leadership of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.”

Churches that follow the eastern calendar celebrate Christmas Eve on the evening of January 6, where his Holiness Pope Tawadros II will head the Feast Mass at the Cathedral of Nativity in the New Administrative Capital.

Priest Andrea Zaki, the head of the Evangelical community in Egypt will preside over the sect’s celebrations in the Church of the Dubara Palace in downtown Cairo on January 5.
