CAIRO - 17 June 2017: Cairo Criminal Court sentenced to death Saturday 31 defendants accused of involvement in the assassination of former Attorney General Hisham Barakat, referring their case to the Grand Mufti for a religious opinion.

The rest of 67 defendants in the same case will remain in custody, according to the court ruling.

A final verdict is set to be announced on June 22.

After the Mufti provides his unbinding opinion to the court, it either confirms or commutes the sentence, after which defendants may appeal the sentence legally.

The defendants are facing other charges, most notably association with Palestinian militant group Hamas and aiming to foment instability in the country, as well as illegal possession of firearms.

On May 14, the Court set the June 10 session to issue its verdict in the case.

Barakat was assassinated on June 29, 2015 when a car bomb detonating in his car outside his home in Cairo’s Heliopolis neighborhood.
