CAIRO, Dec 8 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli highlighted the state's efforts to upgrade the transport sector nationwide to realize development and facilitate people's movement.

He said the underground metro is a vital means of transportation carrying millions of commuters daily, noting that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi gave orders to finalize remaining stages of the subway.

Madbouli made the remarks as the deep drilling machine started digging the Maspero metro station within the framework of the first part of the third stage of Greater Cairo underground metro.

The premier underlined that the underground metro is one of key solutions for streamlining traffic.

Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir said the third stage of the underground metro Line 3 will stretch from Attaba till Cairo University. It is 17.7 kilometers long and includes 15 tunnels and at-grade stations.

It will be carried out over three stages.

Cairo Metro Line 3 aims to connect Attaba Station with the already existing Gamal Abdel Nasser Station through 26th of July Street then it will continue on its way onto northern Maspero and run under both branches of the Nile passing through Zamalek island at Zamalek Station until reaching the Kit Kat Station under the Kit Kat Square.

The metro's Line 3 cost is estimated at 97 billion pounds, he said.
