CAIRO, 2 December 2019: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli underlined on Monday the importance of nuclear energy as one of the strategic options to achieve sustainable development.

The premier gave the remarks during the opening session of the fifth Arab Forum on the Prospects of Nuclear Power for Electricity Generation and Seawater Desalination.

The forum is a good chance for maintaining coordination among Arab countries on the peaceful use of nuclear energy to meet growing demands on electricity, he said.

He paid tribute to the Arab League for its efforts to create an atmosphere for joint Arab cooperation in the energy domain.

He thanked both the Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the Arab Atomic Energy Authority as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for organizing the forum.

Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker, Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League Kamal Hassan Ali and a number of senior Egyptian and Arab officials are taking part in the three-day event.

The option of electricity generation and water desalination with nuclear energy has become a strategic option for Arab countries to respond to water resources scarcity and industrial and socio-economic development. Many Arab countries have expressed their interest in adopting nuclear energy for electricity generation and seawater desalination and sought assistance from IAEA and AAEA.

The Forum aims to include the nuclear option of electricity generation and seawater desalination in the Members states strategies to diversify energy resources. It offers an opportunity for many countries to deepen their study about their domestic conditions, their environment, and their strategies for a sustainable nuclear power option.
