CAIRO – 30 October 2019: Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met on Tuesday with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas during his visit to Cairo.
Maas delivered to Sisi German Chancellor Angela Merkel's best regards, praising the "strong and special" relations between Egypt and Germany, presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady said in an official statement. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry attended the meeting, according to Rady.
Maas added that Egypt is considered the "keystone" of stability and balance in the Middle East and Africa, highlighting the country's essential role in confronting terrorism and extremism. Maas also stressed that Berlin is keen on enhancing its relations with Cairo on all levels.
For his part, Sisi sent his regards to Chancellor Merkel, affirming that Egypt is interested in utilizing the German expertise especially in technology and education.
Sisi and Maas discussed several issues of mutual concern including the trade, economy and security ties. Both sides also discussed the latest updates regarding the political situation in Libya and Syria. Sisi asserted Egypt welcomes all new German investments especially after the implementation of the latest economic reforms by the government.
Mass and Shoukry later held a joint press conference where they answered a number of questions and commented on the situation in Libya and the recent updates in Lebanon, which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri.
“The situation in Lebanon is very sensitive, and we hope stability prevails,” Maas said during the conference.
In the presence of Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem, Maas handed the Egyptian Government a historical book that was smuggled to Germany after being stolen from the Egyptian National Library and Archives, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez, who posted a photo on his official Twitter account.
