CAIRO – 29 September 2019: The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) grievously mourned “Ganna”, a 4 years old child who died on Saturday after succumbing to the wounds she sustained due to long severe torture in the hands of her maternal grandmother.

The NCCM Secretary-General, Azza Ashmawy, called for the harshest penalty for the perpetrators as the heinous crime is considered to be a premeditated murder which is punished by execution according to the articles 230 and 231 of the Egyptian penal code.

The NCCM is following closely the investigation carried out by the public prosecution office, Ashmawy told Egypt Today. She added that all the measures and procedures have been taken to protect Ganna’s older sister (6 years), who were tortured as well by her grandmother but luckily she survived.

Ashmawy noted that the NCCM provided the needed psychological aid for the older traumatized sister, adding that a report will be sent to the prosecution office to have the child transferred from the place where her life is in jeopardy in accordance with the article 99 of the child law.

Ashmawy said that the NCCM is looking for a guardian or a childcare home to receive custody of the older sister until she is safe, adding that the NCCM does not take children protection and safety lightly.

The NCCM tackled the shocking incident after receiving a call on the hotline (1600) to take later the required procedures through its child protection committee in Dakahlia governorate where the crime took place.

The council followed the Ganna’s condition and made sure she receives the proper medical treatment as she was suffering from multiple serious wounds.

Ganna was severely beaten, n sensitive areas of her body were burnt and her nails were removed when she was sent to the hospital.
