CAIRO – 22 April 2019: The sorting process of the Egyptian expats' ballots on the constitutional amendments in 140 Egyptian embassies and consulates worldwide has ended.

The sorting of the ballots was conducted at the Egyptian embassies and consulates. The initial results of the three-day vote on the new amendments that allow President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to remain in power until 2030 will be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will then send the results to the National Election Authority (NEA).

Egyptian expatriates started voting on Friday. Meanwhile, nationals in Egypt have started voting on April 20.

The amendments include a “transitional article” that allows President Sisi to remain in power until 2024. Sisi will also have the right to run for a new 6-year term. The amendments also give the president the right to choose heads of courts, judicial bodies, the Supreme Constitutional Court, and the Attorney General, Egypt's top prosecutor from some nominees.

A number of Egyptian ambassadors stated that embassies and consulates have witnessed a high turnout over the three-day vote.
