CAIRO – 27 February 2019: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday offered his deepest condolences for victims of the explosion that broke out at Cairo’s Ramsis Train Station.

At least 20 people were announced dead and 42 others injured as a train locomotive crashed into a buffer stop at platform no. 6 at the station.

Heavy black smoke was seen billowing from the building in central Cairo.

Immediately, security forces completely halted all movement and closed off the site with ambulances and firefighters nearby.

The fire engines managed to control the fire, and ambulances arrived to transport the wounded to the nearest hospitals.

Minister of Transport Hisham Barakat visited the scene and announced that a technical committee had been set up to determine the cause of the incident. Hours later, Barakat submitted his resignation.
