CAIRO - 12 February 2019: Three police officers were sentenced to three years in prison over charges of torturing a citizen to death in Sohag, Upper Egypt, Sohag Criminal Court stated on Monday.

According to the investigations, the three officers, Al-Mozamel N., Omar Sh. and Omar S., were convicted of handcuffing Mohamed S. and beating him to death to force him to confess murder of another person in 2016.

The court also sentenced a physician, charged with forging a forensic report on the victim, to one year in jail and suspended him from his duty for two years.

On February 3, 2019, Minya Criminal Court sentenced a police officer convicted of killing a Christian worker and his son in front of a church in Upper Egypt's Minya to death.
Many Egyptian policemen have been handed prison terms for criminal charges. In November 2016, Cairo Criminal Court sentenced a low-ranking police officer to life in prison for killing a street vendor after a brawl over paying for his cup of tea. Another low-ranking police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a driver in Cairo’s district of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar in April 2016.

Also in 2016, some police personnel received prison sentences for killing detainees after attacking and torturing them.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, however, has called for not blaming the institution for the behavior of a few of its members. “Some individuals' wrong practices should not be generalized on the police system as a whole,” he said during a visit to the Police Academy on Dec. 3, 2015.
