CAIRO - 3 October 2018: Newly-elected Chairman of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Mohamed al-Halbousi arrived in Egypt early Wednesday to participate in the Arab Parliament meetings in Cairo.

Halbousi is expected to hold a press conference in the Iraqi Embassy in Cairo on Thursday, October 4 to tackle all the latest updates that took place in Iraq, especially in Baghdad and Basra.

Halbousi was elected on Saturday, September 19 as the new Parliament speaker, succeeding Salim al-Jabouri who served as the Iraqi Parliament speaker from July 2014 to July 2018.

According to Reuters, electing Halbousi marks an important step towards establishing a new government, four months after an inconclusive national election.

Halbousi's election marks the start of a 90-day process outlined in the constitution, designed to eventually lead to a new government. Halbousi defeated former Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi, winning the position with 169 votes, according to Shi'ite lawmaker Husham al-Suhail. Iraq's Parliament contains 329 seats.

On Tuesday night, Iraq's Parliament elected veteran Kurdish politician Barham Salih as the new Iraqi president.

"Today is a remarkable day for Iraq. Democracy won," said lawmaker Rebwar Taha from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the party that nominated Salih, who won the votes of 219 lawmakers, according to state television.
