Egypt celebrates “Africa Day” May 25

CAIRO – 23 May 2017: Egypt will celebrate Africa Day, which marks the 54th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, which presently recognized as the African Union, according to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Abu Zeid in a Tuesday statement.

Egypt played a vital role in liberating African countries through supporting the African liberation movements and hosting several leaders of African emancipation such as; former president of Ghana, Nkrumah, former president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere; and former Prime Minister of Algeria, Ahmed Ben Bella as well as others, according to a statement.

The founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) is held in the dearest memories of every African citizen including Egyptians, which marks the culmination of the continent's struggle for freedom, independence and development.

The ministry of foreign affairs stated in the statement that it has launched a media campaign under the name “Egypt ... The African Outlook” on the ministry’s social media pages with the hashtag “Egypt_African_Outlook”.

The campaign includes the publication of a series of posts highlighting the African dimension of Egypt and the most important achievements in all fields.

Abu Zeid said that the media campaign also includes a recorded radio broadcast by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, the ambassador of the Republic of Congo to Egypt, Moushira Khattab (Egypt and Africa candidate for the post of Director-General of UNESCO) and the ambassador of Guinea, Conakry.
