CAIRO - 22 July 2018: The Civil Protection Authority’s report on the fire that broke out at Al-Hussein University Hospital in Cairo revealed many violations found inside the hospital including the absence of fire extinguishers and an alarm system.

Earlier, the Public Prosecution ordered the autopsy of the patient who died during the fire, and requested that forensics submit a detailed report on the reasons behind his death. It also ordered for launching investigations on the accident.

Previously, three people were injured due to the massive fires that erupted at the four-story Al-Hussein University Hospital in Cairo on July 7, the Health Ministry stated, saying that all other patients were evacuated immediately.

The health minister affirmed that the injured people and patients were evacuated from the hospital, admitting them to other hospitals so as to avoid having the smoke affect their recovery and to ensure that they receive the necessary treatment, through 15 ambulances provided by the ministry.

The Civil Defense Department thwarted the fires using 12 fire trucks and dozens of firefighters to put out the fire that broke out in the four floors of the hospital.

Al-Hussein University Hospital is owned by al-Azhar University; funded and supervised by al-Azhar institution.

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyib, directed al-Azhar leaders to provide the hospital’s patients with all the necessary aids, and to launch an immediate investigation behind the reason the fire broke out and to hold the culprits accountable.

The initial examination pointed out that a short circuit caught fire at the ophthalmology department and extended to the three other floors, while al-Azhar Unversity denied in an official statement any deaths caused by the incident.

Undersecretary of al-Azhar Abbas Shoman and President of al-Azhar University Mohamed al-Mahrasawy were present at the incident site to follow up on the evacuation and firefighting and to ensure they were going as quickly as possible.

“Up to 115 patients were evacuated from the hospital and admitted to other hospitals like al-Mounira General hospital, Sayed Galal and al-Zahraa’ Hospital,” al-Azhar’s statement read.
