CAIRO – 14 April 2018: Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met with Pope Tawadros II on Friday at St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abbasiya.

During the meeting, the president invited Pope Tawadros to visit Portugal, extending his sincere condolences over the victims of the Palm Sunday twin bombings that occurred last year.

The president’s visit to the cathedral was preceded by his tour to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

A delegation from the Portuguese embassy escorted the president on his tour.

Also, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail received the Portuguese leader on Thursday to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Earlier on Wednesday, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi received his Portuguese counterpart at the Ithadeya Presidential Palace. De Sousa is paying a two-day state visit, where he will discuss the enhancement of economic relations as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern.

This is the first visit for a Portuguese president to Egypt in 24 years. De Sousa was elected as president in 2016.
