CAIRO – 21 March 2018: Minister of Immigration, Nabila Makram, decided to visit her former school, Saint Anne School, to honor her teacher, Sœur Pauline, on Mother’s Day.

“Le cœur chaud” or [warm-hearted] was how Sœur Pauline described the feeling of seeing her student.“It’s the feeling of a mother who sees her daughter after a long time. I’d like to thank her for all she has done for me, and for coming here today just to return the favor on Mother’s Day.”

Sœur Pauline will soon be celebrating fifty years of monasticism. She is proud of all of her students and of the opportunity she has had to nurture their growth through her years of service, including that of her former student, Nabila Makram.

“I’m proud of who she grew up to be,” she stated on ON Live television on Wednesday morning. “Not just for me or the school, but I’m proud of what she became for Egypt.”

Makram visited Saint Anne School on Mother’s Day with a bouquet of flowers for her teacher. Makram said that Sœur Pauline didn’t just help her to become the minster she is now, but that “she helped other girls to become what they dreamt to be: doctors, engineers, etc. They are all positively effective now in our society.”

Sitting beside Sœur Pauline, the minister continued: “I lost my father when I was 10 years old; she [Sœur Pauline] shared with my mother the responsibility of educating me until I became who I am now."

"I can proudly say that I have two mothers, one at home and another at school,” Makram added passionately.

The nuns' schools in Egypt are known to be amongst the most disciplined schools, and enjoy an excellent reputation of producing educated and well-behaved students. Many families choose such schools for their children, knowing that they will receive a quality education.

Returning to former schools with simple gifts, such as roses, to be presented to teachers is known to be a tradition in Egypt, particularly among female students. Some schools organize special celebrations to honor mothers on Mother’s Day in order to express gratefulness for everything they do.
