CAIRO – 20 April 2017: Legal sources confirmed that the court ruling against former Minister of Interior Habib al-Adly is enforceable, Wednesday.

The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Adly and two other interior ministry officials to seven years in prison over charges of illicit gains. The statement came out as the Central Cairo General Prosecution revealed on Wednesday not receiving the court’s verdict.

Moreover, Mohamed El-Gendy, Adly’s lawyer, claimed the court ruling “not final” and that it cannot be appealed unless a retrial took place.

Sources have also stressed that because Adly did not attend the ruling in person does not mean by necessity that the ruling is in absentia; confirming that the ruling can be appealed within 60 days, starting the ruling date.

The defendants were convicted of using their influence to illegally acquire EGP2.4 billion (around USD132 million) when Adly was the Minister of Interior.

Adly served as ousted president Hosni Mubarak's Minister of Interior from 1997 until 2011.

In 2014, he was acquitted, along with six of his aides, on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the January 25th Revolution in 2011.
