CAIRO – 18 December 2017: The Ministry of Transport announced the manufacturing of 300 railway wagons in cooperation with the Arab Organization for Industrialization by the end of next year, according to Minister of Transport Hesham Arafat.

Arafat added in an interview with ON Live that the Egyptian railways had not witnessed any expansions since 1950, pointing out that the railway network used to transport 6 million passengers annually, while there are currently 300 million passengers.

On the other hand, the Parliament’s Planning and Budget Committee demanded on Sunday that the Ministry of Finance secure LE 350 million to develop the railway system of the country, further demanding the chairman of the Egyptian National Railways Authority to present a development plan for the entity.

The committee also called on the ministries of finance and planning to present their suggestions to develop the railway system and maximize revenues of transporting goods.

The demands of the committee came during a meeting held by a sub-committee headed by member of Parliament (MP) Moustafa Salem and formed by the Planning and Budget Committee. The meeting was held to follow up on the implementation of the committee’s recommendations in terms of the final annual report on the fiscal year 2015/16, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Egyptian National Railways Authority.
