Lebanese patriarch meets Saudi king, Hariri in significant visit
Lebanon's Christian Maronite Patriarch met Saudi Arabian King Salman on Tuesday, in a visit to the Saudi kingdom amid tensions between the two countries in the wake of PM Saad al-Hariri’s resigniation made from the Sunni-majority kingdom.

The patriarch will also meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has pledged to revive "a middle-of-the-road, moderate Islam open to the world and all religions, traditions and people" in his country, according to Reuters.

An official visit to the kingdom by such a senior non-Muslim cleric is a rare act of religious openness for Saudi Arabia, which hosts the holiest sites in Islam and has reservations on practicing non-Islamic rituals publicly.

Iran's quake death toll rises to 530, thousands injured
At least 530 people were killed in Iran’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, state news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday, adding that more than 8,000 others were injured, according to Reuters.

Iran’s 7.3-magnitude quake has left approximately 70,000 people in need of shelter as a result of severe losses in buildings, while rescue operations had ended in the western province of Kermanshah.

Japan's Abe offers $1 billion in aid to Myanmar's Suu Kyi
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday pledged up to $1.03 billion of development aid to Myanmar in a meeting in Manila with government leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Reuters reported.

The low-interest loan will be used to fund projects, including infrastructure and small businesses meant to help improve rural incomes, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a release, Reuters reported.

The aid pledge comes as Myanmar faces intense criticism from human rights groups, the United Nations and other countries for its atrocities toward the Muslim minorities, which has sparked an exodus of more than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh since August.

"The first daylight in Symi revealed the widespread disaster caused by the powerful wave of bad weather," the Shipping Ministry said in a statement.

Volunteers and equipment from the army and regional government had been deployed to the eastern Aegean island to restore roads and other damage caused by Monday's storm, Reuters reported.
