CAIRO – 7 September 2017: Egypt welcomed on Saturday the United States decision to lift economic sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1997, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a press statement.

Abu Zeid asserted that this decision will contribute in supporting stability and development of Sudan. Egypt has always requested that the U.S lift the economic sanctions, in solidarity with the brotherly State of Sudan.

The United States declared that it will lift a myriad of economic sanctions against Sudan next Thursday, marking a significant warming of relations with Sudan, CNN reported on Friday.

The move follows 16 months of diplomatic negotiations, initiated under former US President Barack Obama and continued under President Donald Trump, who signed off on the sanctions relief.
Starting October 12, however, Sudan will no longer be subject to a 20-year-old US trade embargo and will have access to previously frozen assets.
