CAIRO – 29 September 2017: Following the balance price hikes that have been announced to hit mobile users in Egypt, existing scratch cards are to be annulled until the new-priced ones are all set.

On Thursday, mobile companies in Egypt announced that prices for all categories of their recharge balance cards will go up by 36% starting Friday.

Ehab Said, head of the Divison of Communications Centers, said that people can recharge their call balance by using the instant pay-as-you-go systems prevalent in stores until the new scratch cards get prepared.

The new prices come in line with the liberation of the pound that came as part of the economic reform program that Egypt began implementing late last year in order to revive its ailing economy.

Social media users launched boycott campaigns against the mobile network companies in protest of what they called “acts of monopoly and profiteering.”
