CAIRO – 10 August 2017: Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly awarded the championship cup of the football tournament for recovered addicts.

The tournament, played under the slogan “Heroism over Drugs” (using Arabic wordplay to convey both the word for ‘heroism’ and ‘tournament’) came as part of the larger campaign of “I am Stronger than Drugs.” The campaign, which started through the addiction hotline (16023), was an effort by the ministry to rehabilitate drug addicts and support their journey back into society.

Waly stressed that the tournament’s aim was to erase the stigma about addicts and support them, and show that addiction was a treatable illness, as well as to spread the competitive spirit among the 160 players.

She added that the initiative ‘New Beginning’ was established to aid rehabilitated addicts with starting small businesses and finding a way to financially support themselves.

Egyptian National Team goalkeeper, Ahmed Shobeir, provided commentary for the tournament.

Actor Mohamed Ramadan joined the teams in playing in the final match of the tournament.

Singer Ahmed Gamal gave a short performance.

The tournament was organized by the Addiction Treatment & Abuse Fund in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The drug addiction hotline received over 37,000 calls since the beginning of the year 2017, a surge compared to 2016, as a result of the ad campaign starring Liverpool F.C. player Mohamed Salah.

The hotline (16023) exercises complete confidentiality and is available 24 hours a day.
