Egypt receives 2nd German ‘Type 209’ attack submarine

CAIRO – 8 August 2017: Egypt officially received its second attack submarine from Germany in a ceremony held in Keil city.

Commander-in-Chief of ‎the Egyptian Navy Rear Admiral Ahmed Khaled and a number of Egyptian military leaders attended the ceremony, where the submarine was announced Egyptian.

Admiral Khaled signed a cooperation protocol with German multi international conglomerate "thyssenkrupp."

The German-based company provides marine systems, shipbuilding, services along with plant technologies, elevator systems.

The German-made “Type 209” submarine will consecutively join the Egyptian navy; it is armed with torpedoes for securing Egyptian coasts and regional waters and preserving national security.

Last December, the Egyptian flag was raised on the first “Type 209” submarine received in Kiel, Germany.

Recently, the naval forces inked a number of agreements to boost their capabilities, including the acquisition of the "Suleiman Ezzat" missiles, the "Frim" frigate from France, four "Gowind" corvettes and the “RKA 32” launchers that were gifted to Egypt by the Russians.

Egypt has strengthened its naval capabilities after signing agreements that culminated in acquiring mighty "Nasser "and "Sadat" helicopter carriers.

Here’s why the German submarine is considered a huge addition to the Egyptian naval forces capabilities:

Made in 1960s, the 64.4-meter-long “Type 209/1400” attack submarine can sail up at speed of 21 knots (11 thousand miles/ 20372 kmh) is capable of submerging at 500 meters deep and can carry up to eight Torpedo tubes.

Besides it having a countermeasures and anti-torpedo countermeasure system, the German sub is capable of launching “Harboon” missiles and Plant sea mines.

The Diesel-Electric submarine can operate under and on sea surface, possessing a high tech fire computers tube launch system which contributes to the protection of the Egyptian coasts and regional waters and preserving national security.
