Greek PM, Egyptian president discuss direct transportation of energy to Europe at COP 27

CAIRO – 8 November 2022: Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Tuesday at the summit of Mideast Climate Initiative, held on the sidelines of COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh, that he had discussed with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi projects that would accomplish direct transportation of energy to Europe.  

 

The Greek prime minister noted that climate change is affecting the environment, food, water, energy and migration Eastern Mediterranean. Hence, he stressed the importance of cooperation among the region's countries, when either is hit by wildfires or floods.

 

In October 2021, Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker signed electricity linkage MoUs with Greece and Cyprus in the presence of the chiefs of state of the three countries who were convening at the ninth Tripartite Summit held in Athens.

 

A month later, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tareq el Molla signed a memorandum of understanding with Greek Minister for the Environment and Energy Konstantinos Skrekas on natural gas.

 

This came on the sidelines of the 6th Ministerial Meeting of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum held in Cairo.
 

The MoU covers three prioritized areas of cooperation including liquefied natural gas trading, relevant research and exploration activities, and the actual linking of both countries' natural gas pipeline networks.
