CAIRO – 5 November 2022: The first Egypt-Air flight that uses Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) arrived Saturday at Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport in Egypt, coming from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, with number of participants in the Climate Summit (COP27) on board.

The trip comes hours before the launch of the awaited summit, which will be hosted by Sharm El-Sheikh, from 6 to 18 November, in the presence of a large number of presidents, leaders, officials and thousands of people concerned with environment from all over the world.

In a usual tradition, Sharm El-Sheikh Airport administration sprinkled water on the plane to celebrate the arrival of the first flight of EgyptAir that uses biofuels.

On its Facebook page, EgyptAir considered the flight as “major achievement throughout its history.”

“A commercial flight of Boeing B787-9 Dreamliner is operating today with sustainable biofuels from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris directly to Sharm El Sheikh Airport, carrying passengers participating in the COP27 climate conference in accordance with the goals of the United Nations in field of sustainable development.” EgyptAir stated

More than 100 heads of state and governments will attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) set to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The heads of state and government will deliver their national statements on November 7 and 8 at the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit, one day after the kick-off of the two-week conference. On the opening day, Egyptian Foreign Minister and COP27 President-Designate Sameh Shoukry will be officially elected as the President of the Conference of the Parities' 27th session.

A total of 40,000 participants are expected to attend Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit, thematic days, flagship initiatives, and Green Zone activities, and are set to engage with climate and other overlapping global challenges.

Shoukry stated that Egypt is ready to host the world leaders, delegates and climate stakeholders under the slogan "Together for Implementation".

US President Joe Biden will not attend the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit but he will participate in the conference on November 11 “to advance the global climate fight and help the most vulnerable build resilience to climate impacts, and he will highlight the need for the world to act in this decisive decade,” according to a statement from the White House.

Meanwhile, New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday that he will attend the conference after having been slammed for not attending. “There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That is why I will attend COP27 next week to deliver on Glasgow's legacy of building a secure and sustainable future,” Sunak said on Twitter.
