Egyptian president makes phone call to Kenyan counterpart on Ethiopian Dam

CAIRO – 30 October 2022: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi made Saturday a phone call to his newly-elected Kenyan counterpart William Ruto to discuss the developments of major regional affairs of joint interest, particularly the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

 

There was congruence among the two chiefs of state on the salience of intensifying efforts aimed at the conclusion of a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam in a way that fulfills the interests of all parties and maintains stability in the Nile Basin, according to a press statement by the Egyptian presidency.

 

President Sisi also congratulated President Ruto on his September win of presidential election, wishing him success in leading his country to a further prosperous future.

 

Moreover, the Egyptian president expressed his keenness on consulting and coordinating with the Kenyan president on African issues, in light of the distinguished role of both states in preserving peace and security on the continental level.

 

On his side, the Kenyan president valued the ties with Egypt, affirming the presence of wide horizons to expand bilateral relations, and joint work on the African level with the aim of achieving sustainable development, and continental integration.
