CAIRO – 20 September 2022: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, the President-Designate of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), participated on Monday, September 19, 2022, in a high-level side event of the Group of 77 (G77) held on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on climate change loss and damage, which was chaired by the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, the current chair of G77.

 

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that Minister Shoukry stressed during the event the importance of addressing the issue of loss and damage, which has become a recurring phenomenon around the world and is manifested in several forms such as severe weather events that result in great human and material losses and damages.

 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs was also keen to review the Egyptian presidency's vision of COP27 in this regard, explaining that climate change loss and damage are a fundamental issue on the international climate action agenda that must be carefully addressed during the COP27. In this context, Minister Shoukry pointed out that the Egyptian presidency of COP27 organized informal consultations at the level of heads of delegations on September 10-11, with the aim of converging views between the various concerned parties.

 

The Spokesperson concluded his remarks by referring to COP27 President-designate expressing his aspiration for the active engagement of all climate action stakeholders, including G77, in addressing the issue of loss and damage in a way that contributes COP27 yielding positive results on this issue.
