Egypt condemns mosque blast in Afghanistan’s Herat

CAIRO - 3 September 2022: Egypt expressed its strong condemnation of the bombing that targeted a mosque in the city of Herat, western Afghanistan, which led to the killing and injuring of dozens of innocent victims, said Spokesperson of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez in a statement on Saturday.

 

“Egypt extends its sincere condolences to all the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. Egypt reiterates its condemnation and rejection of all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism,” the statement read.

 

At least 18 people were killed, including a prominent Islamic cleric, and 23 others were wounded in a blast occurring inside a mosque, western Afghanistan, on Friday, Tolo News reported.

 

Mawlawi Mujeeb Rahman Ansari, a prominent Islamic cleric and imam of Guzargah mosque in Herat province, was killed in the blast.

 

The blast happened during the Friday prayers inside the mosque and was due to a suicide attack, local officials said.

 

There are no details about the number of casualties but local people said that many people were killed and wounded in the blast.

 

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
