CAIRO – 26 August 2022: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed on Thursday preparations for the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) with Danish Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen.

Shoukry, president-designate of COP27, received the Danish minister, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest between the two sides regarding international climate action.

Shoukry expressed during the meeting his appreciation for the Danish minister's visit, saying it reflects Denmark's support for the Egyptian presidency of COP27 and its commitment to sparing no effort to enhance climate action.

The foreign minister also hailed Denmark’s hosting of the May Ministerial Meeting on Implementation, which represented an important opportunity for the Egyptian COP27 presidency in order to clearly identify the various aspects related to climate change issues.

The meeting also reviewed Egypt’s outlook on the key themes on the conference’s agenda, especially regarding adaptation to climate change, mitigation of its negative repercussions.

This is in addition to addressing loss and damage and providing climate finance in a way that helps ensure that the conference yield the desired results to promote international climate action at various levels.

Egypt is preparing to host COP27 next November and has been keen to build on the success of Glasgow summit (COP26) and turn climate pledges into actions.

In July, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi delivered a speech at the high-level session of the Berlin-hosted Petersburg Climate Dialogue, where he affirmed that Egypt will spare no effort to make the COP27 a success.

Sisi said that recent climate change reports indicate that exerted efforts are still insufficient, “and that we must save the earth for future generations.” Sisi also noted that the world needs a fair transition to green and renewable energy.

“We must think about the losses incurred by developing countries, especially small countries in African countries. It is important that we think about doing more in terms of financing, as richer countries should play a bigger role regarding Climate change” Sisi said.
