Int'l reactions welcoming Gaza ceasefire, hailing Egyptian diplomatic role

CAIRO – 8 August 2022: The international community has welcomed the announced ceasefire between Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement and Israel, on Sunday, lauding Egypt’s diplomatic key role during the past days.

“I welcome the announcement tonight of a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza-based militants after three days of hostilities. “The White House said in a Sunday statement.

It was added that over the last 72-hours, the United States has worked with officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, and others throughout the region to encourage a swift resolution to the conflict.

“I thank President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and the senior Egyptian officials who played a central role in this diplomacy as well as Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar and his team for helping to bring these hostilities to an end.” Biden stated in his statement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza, commending Egypt's efforts to help restore calm, said Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric.

In a statement published Monday on the UN News Center, Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the victims of the violence and their loved ones. The hostilities have contributed to a humanitarian emergency.

"Guterres is deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries, including children, from airstrikes in Gaza and the indiscriminate firing of rockets toward Israel from population centers in Gaza by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other militant groups," reads the statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed on Monday the Egyptian mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire between the Israeli and Palestinian sides in the Gaza Strip.

In a phone call with head of the Hamas political bureau Ismail Haniyeh, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow supports the immediate restoration of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to Tass.

"Russia confirmed its support for the immediate restoration of the Gaza ceasefire and welcomed related mediation efforts. At the same time, it was emphasized that new cycles of violence between Palestine and Israel can be effectively prevented through the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, which would leave in peace and security with Israel," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the call.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh thanked Egypt for its efforts to stop the shedding of Palestinians' blood in the Gaza Strip and halt the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, the Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported.

This came during the Palestinian cabinet's meeting to discuss the three-day Israeli aggression on Gaza that left 44 Palestinians dead. The meeting also discussed the needs of the health and service sector.

He further noted that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Palestine today, hoping that it will rise to the level of the suffering of the Palestinians and arrive at an implementable decision based on providing international protection for the Palestinian people.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed on Sunday tremendous efforts made by Egypt that led to stopping the Israeli aggression against Gaza Strip.

According to WAFA news agency, Abbas hailed President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's ongoing stances that support the Palestinians.

He noted that these efforts contribute to easing the tensions and relieving the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Al-Assoumi hailed Egypt’s efforts, led by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, to reach a ceasefire between the Israeli and Palestinian sides in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli onslaught on the Palestinian enclave killed and injured dozens of civilians including children.

In a press release, Assoumi asserted that realizing permanent peace and stability requires exerting more international efforts to resume the peace process in the Middle East.

He said that Egypt’s efforts reflect the crucial Egyptian diplomacy and leading role to preserve the security and stability of the region.

They also show how important the Palestinian cause is to Egypt, he added, commending all Egyptian efforts in quest of a just solution for the decades-running Palestinian-Israeli conflict that guarantees the creation of an independent Palestinian stat

In a brief statement, Sunday night Egypt said that in light of its keenness to end the escalation in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Cairo has called for a comprehensive and mutual ceasefire between the two rivals, starting on 23:30 (Palestinian Time)

“Egypt is exerting its efforts to release Palestinian prisoner Khalil Al-Awawda, who was on a hunger strike inside an Israeli prison, and transfer him to receive treatment”, a security official told Egypt Today.

Egypt is also working to release the prisoner Bassam Al-Saadi, a member of the Islamic Jihad Movement, as soon as possible, the source added.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement confirmed that Egypt-brokered ceasefire with Israel has been reached, according to Sky News.

Israel has stricken Gaza Strip for three days, targeting the members of the Palestinian Jihadi Movement.

The attacks resulted in killing 43 people, including 15 children and 4 women, and injuring 311 others including children, women and elderly people, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced on Sunday.
