CAIRO – 24 July 2022: One of the shores on Egypt’s northern coastline has been eroded by the Mediterranean Sea due to the increasing sea temperature.

The western area of Sidi Abdel Rahman Gulf on the North Coast has been eroded by the sea since the 1990s due to the increasing sea surface temperature, Al Watan newspaper reported.

The Ministry of Environment said it is in contact with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, and other concerned bodies in the area to follow up on this issue.

As per a study titled “Regional Studies in Marine Science,” the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea was increasing 0.055 °C/yr in average in the period between 2005 and 2014.

The Ministry also said it that there is also turbidity in seawater in the coastal area adjacent to the UAE-owned village of Marassi, adding that a committee has been tasked to study and analyze water in this area due to dredging work. Three days later, the committee found that the rate of turbidity is higher than normal. Thus, a decision issued by Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad decided to stop dredging work in the area.
