US looks forward to reinvigorating cooperation frameworks with Egypt, Biden tells Sisi

CAIRO – 16 July 2022: The US administration looks forward to reinvigorating the joint bilateral cooperation frameworks with Egypt, US President Joe Biden told President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday.

The leaders met today on the sidelines of the Jeddah Security and Development summit, which later discussed cooperation frameworks between the Arab nations and the US.

During their meeting, Biden affirmed the US keenness to foster the ongoing strategic coordination and consultations with Egypt in the coming period, Egyptian Presidency’s Spokesman Bassam Radi said in a statement.

This is particularly in light of Egypt’s pivotal role in the Middle East, under the wise leadership of Sisi, which constitutes a main pillar for protecting peace and security and spreading peace in the region, the presidency noted.

Sisi welcomed his first meeting with President Biden, affirming Egypt’s commitment to advance the outstanding partnership relations between the two countries.

Sisi also underlined the importance of Egypt-US partnership and its role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East region. The Egyptian president noted that his country looks forward to more coordination and consultations with the US on various issues in the region.

The meeting reviewed aspects of Egyptian-American bilateral cooperation, especially regarding efforts to address the repercussions of the global circumstances linked to the food crisis and disruption in energy supplies.

Sisi and Biden also addressed a number of regional issues.

In this regard, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s firm position with regard to the importance of backing the crisis-affected countries and strengthening their national institutions to end the suffering of their peoples and protect their resources.

The two presidents discussed ways to revive the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, the Egyptian Presidency said.

In this regard, Sisi underscored Egypt’s fixed stance toward the Palestinian cause, affirming the need to reach a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people.

This includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in accordance with international references.

Sisi said Egypt is committed to cooperate with the US to discuss ways to revive and push forward the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations process.

For his part, Biden hailed efforts made by Egypt to establish peace in the region, praising also Egypt’s fundamental role in maintaining calm between the Palestinians and Israelis as well as its initiative for Gaza reconstruction.

Regarding the water file, Sisi and Biden discussed the latest updates regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Sisi affirmed Egypt’s fixed position with regard to the need to reach a legally-binding agreement for the filling process and operation of the dam in a manner that protects Egypt’s water security and also achieves the common interests of the three countries.
