CAIRO – 24 June 2022: Tunisian Ministry of Interior said on Friday it managed to foil a terrorist attack against the presidency foundation, warning of threats to the life of President Kais Saied, according to media reports.

In a press conference, the ministry said internal and external elements were involved in the plans targeting the president or the president’s foundation.

The ministry said it arrested the assailant after two policemen were injured during the attempted attack on a sensitive point overnight, Reuters reported, citing Faker Bouzghaya, head of communications for the ministry as saying.

Tensions have heightened in Tunisia amid a general strike called by Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Tunisia’s powerful trade union, earlier in June to pressurize the government into meeting the workers’ demands.

This comes in light of months of political turmoil in the Arab country since after President Saied sacked the government of Hichem Mechichi last year and suspended parliament.
