Egypt keen to distance climate talks from latest geopolitical developments at COP27: FM

CAIRO – 8 June 2022: Egypt, president of the UN Climate Change conference (COP27) is keen to distance climate negotiations from the latest geopolitical developments, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told a meeting for the Group of 77 and China in Germany’s Bonn.

The members of the Group of 77 and China are participating in the 56th session of the subsidiary bodies taking place between 6 and 16 June at the World Convention Center Bonn.

Shoukry, president-designate of COP27, also hosted a meeting for heads of the different geographic and political groups participating in the climate change negotiations on Wednesday.

This should enhance trust among all parties of the negotiations and ensure that the negotiating process runs smoothly and yield the desired results, Shoukry said during the meetings.

Shoukry reviewed the priorities of the Egyptian presidency of COP27, on top of which is fulfilling climate pledges and ensuring that the conference yield balanced results that address the various issues of priorities.

This especially includes reducing emissions, climate adaptation, addressing the harms caused by climate change, and securing climate funding, Shoukry explained.

Shoukry highlighted the vital role played by the Group of 77 and China to advance the interests of the developing countries regarding climate change negotiations.

He added that Egypt looks forward to having the group’s support to the efforts exerted by Egypt as the president of COP27 in creating a climate of trust among all parties concerned with the climate action in a way that contributes to the conference’s success.

Shoukry also expressed Egypt’s aspiration for the high-level participation of heads of states and governments during the summit that the Egyptian president will host on 7-8 November on the sidelines of COP27.

Egypt also looks forward for the participation of all countries and parties concerned with climate action in all the conference’s activities in a way that highlights the great importance the international community attaches to face climate change amid the various and consecutive international developments.
