CAIRO – 26 May 2022: A conference will be held at the headquarters of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn on June 6-16 to prepare for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) due to convene on November 7-18, 2022 in Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh.

The Bonn Climate Change Conference is the first face-to-face gathering for the stakeholders from different countries since the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic in 2019, said the UNFCCC in a statement on May 23, 2022.

The COP27 will build on the successes of last year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, the UNFCCC statement added.

“Climate change remains the most existential issue we face. In the long term it is the biggest threat to human life. We need to underline that climate change is the issue of utmost importance. In the last months, we have seen a lot of eagerness from governments to get down to work in Bonn. We have seen a lot of work at workshops and other events – there is a great appetite to make progress,” Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), Tosi Mpanu Mpanu, said in the statement.

Meanwhile, Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) Marianne Karlsen said, “Implementation is key, and that means implementation of all aspects of the Paris Agreement so we can close the ambition gap. We are on track towards a global average temperature rise of 2.7 degrees Celsius - that has to change. We need to step up ambition of the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. This also means ramping up action through policies, measures, and the support for developing countries to underpin action.”
