Egypt rises 2 places on index measuring publishing at international academic journals

CAIRO – 22 May 2022: Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar showcased Sunday that Egypt rose two places between 2020 and 2021 in terms of publishing at international academic journals, according to the latest SCImago rankings issued in April.

 

Egypt currently occupies the 26th place among 232 countries, becoming within the highest 11.2 percent states in that realm. That is the outcome of publishing 38,651 research papers in 2021 compared to 31,786 in 2020 with an increase of 21.6 percent.

 

Egypt ranked 35th among 233 countries in academic paper submissions in 2018, rising three places compared with the previous year, according to the SCImago Journal & Country Rank.

The number of submissions by Egyptian researchers recorded 22,018 with an increase of 17.2 percent, while the amount of citable documents was 20,074. The academic works included a total of 13,995 citations, and 4,257 self-citations.

Egyptian research projects composed 1.3 percent and 12.9 percent of papers submitted to the top 1 percent and 10 percent of the world’s academic journals, respectively.

 

Egypt is among the top 10 percent of countries in submissions in the fields of toxins and treatment, pharmaceuticals, and drug discovery. Egypt is among the top 15 percent of countries in submissions in 20 fields, and among the top 20 percent of countries in submissions in 40 fields.
 

The highest numbers of submissions in 2017 and 2018 were in the fields of medical sciences (5,867), engineering sciences (3,544), and chemistry (2,760).
