CAIRO – 8 May 2022: The European Union Delegation to Egypt, and the United States State Department condemned Sunday the foiled terror attack that targeted a water lifting plant on the eastern bank of the Suez Canal.

The delegation's Twitter account tweeted that EU Ambassador to Cairo Christian Berger extends his condolences to the families of the martyrs, and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

The account also retweeted the denunciation and condolences of EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi.

Further, the United States State Department wrote on its website: "The United States condemns today’s terrorist attack in the Sinai targeting members of the Egyptian military.  For decades, the United States has been and remains Egypt’s strong partner in confronting terrorism in the region.  We wish to express our profound condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in this heinous attack."

A military officer and 10 soldiers were killed as the Egyptian army managed to foil a terrorist attack against a water lift station east of the Suez Canal, Egyptian Military Spokesman Gharib Abdel Hafez said in a statement.

Five military personnel were also injured as the Egyptian army confronted the attack carried out by a group of takfiri elements, the spokesman said on Saturday.

The terrorist elements are being pursued and besieged in one of the isolated areas in Sinai, the spokesman added.

“The armed forces affirm their continued efforts to eradicate terrorism and uproot its roots,” the spokesman stressed.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed later on Saturday that treacherous terrorist attacks will not undermine the determination of people and the army to uproot terrorism.

“The loyal sons of the homeland are still responding to the call of the nation with full courage and sacrifice, continuing unique self-denial and a belief in the doctrine of safeguarding the homeland, which would not be shaken,” Sisi wrote in a Facebook post.

The president extended sincere condolences to the great Egyptian people, armed forces and the families of the martyrs, wishing the injured people a speedy recovery.
