CAIRO – 15 April 2022: Head of the Egyptian National Rice Development Project Hamdy El Muwafi received a gold medal at the 2022 Geneva International Exhibition of Innovations (the International Climate Show) for modifying a new strain of rice that resists water scarcity, said the Egyptian Ministry of the Agriculture

The new strain of giant Sakha rice (Super 300) was praised by both farmers and consumers because of its many advantages of resisting water scarcity and climatic changes, the statement said.

Muwafi said that state pays great attention to applied research and provides it with all aspects of support for having seeds that achieve high productivity, tolerate salinity, adapt to climate changes and reduce water use.

Egypt aims to increase the gross domestic product (GDP) contribution of its agriculture sector to 12 percent by 2024, in addition to increasing agricultural production by 30 percent by 2024, according to Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said in June 2021.
