CAIRO - 12 April 2022: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli chaired on Monday the 6th meeting of the supreme committee tasked with preparing for the 27th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).


Madbouli followed up on the ministries’ efforts to prepare for the conference, scheduled to be held next November in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tareq el Molla, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled el Anani, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala el Saeed, Minister of International Cooperation Rania el Mashat, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait, Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawi, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Assem el Gazzar, Minister of Transport Kamel el Wazir, Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Manar, South Sinai Governor Khaled Fouda, Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Yehia Zaki, in addition to some officials of the ministries and authorities concerned.

Some of the attendees participated in person and others via video conference.

The prime minister said he is following up on ongoing arrangements for Egypt's hosting of COP 27, asserting that all preparations are going on as planned.

The foreign minister reviewed political consultations, expanded talks with negotiating teams on the conference’s expected outcomes, relevant future consultations with African countries, in addition to ongoing coordination as regards the participation of heads of state and government in the event, and related logistical preparations.

The environment minister said the initiatives on waste, water, agriculture, finance, equitable energy transition, sustainable cities, and gender equality have been completed.

Fouad also talked about preparations with regard to accommodation, flights, communications and media, health aspects, technology logistics services, audio-visual facilities, the local support team, and volunteers.

The finance minister reviewed the work of the finance committee concerned with financing Egypt’s hosting of COP27, including the conference’s sponsorship strategy, criteria for selecting sponsoring companies, and expected financial contributions.

Meanwhile, the transport minister reviewed the status of a plan to transport delegates to the conference via sustainable green means of transport, noting that 20 natural gas-powered buses are being received.

Wazir added that contracts have been signed to purchase 70 electric buses.

The chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone briefed the prime minister on the status of ongoing cooperation with some international companies investing in projects to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia at the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Those projects are being carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, he added.

The ministers of electricity, tourism, planning, international cooperation, local development, and communications have all reviewed ongoing coordination on Egypt's hosting of the conference; with regard to the infrastructure-related works meant to develop Sharm El-Sheikh city.

In the same regard, the South Sinai governor briefed the premier on the efforts made to upgrade Sharm El-Sheikh in preparation for the conference, including the development of the central park, the city’s entrance, and the waste recycling system, in addition to the use of solar energy in some areas and hotels.
