Egypt’s Ministry of Environment makes Eco-friendly Ramadan Lanterns

CAIRO – 1 April 2022: Celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment made Ramadan Lantern (known as fawanees) of household waste.

 

The Green Corner Unit team at the Central Administration for Information and Environmental Awareness at the Ministry of Environment presented a distinctive design for Ramadan lantern made of eco-friendly components of household waste such as fabric, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, spoons and plastic bottle caps.

 

 

The recycled lanterns aim at raising environmental awareness among all groups and segments of society. They also can save money of the high cost of buying a lantern.

 

Cairo is famous among Arab and Muslim cities as one of the best destinations for observing an authentic Ramadan experience. In Egypt, the spiritual and religious aspects of the Islamic holy month are combined with entertaining activities and cultural traditions.

 

One of these unique traditions is Ramadan lanterns, which have always been very special in Egyptian history. They come in various shapes, light bulbs and colors.

 

The tradition of decorating homes and neighborhoods with fawanees during Ramadan has passed from generation to generation.

 

For many Egyptians, Ramadan is not complete without the image of children happily playing with their fawanees in the streets, singing the Egyptian Arabic poem composed by Ahmed Sherif, "Wahawi ya Wahawi."
